My Teaching Philosophy
For the past ten years, I have taught saxophone lessons to students of all ages and abilities from elementary school to adults. As a core part of my teaching, I see to it to assign appropriately challenging methods, etudes, technique, and repertoire to account for the unique needs of each student. Regardless of a student’s level, a common thread through all my teaching is finding varied and engaging ways of practicing saxophone fundamentals, with a particular focus on building a robust and confident tone, establishing a precise sense of rhythm, and developing a proper understanding and execution for single-reed articulation. I take great care in tackling the root of each musical issue and rebuilding good habits instead of patching these issues up with temporary fixes that are “good enough”. Whether a student is interested in pursuing classical or jazz styles, I work with them to select music and etudes that they will find both fulfilling and enjoyable, which I believe is a vital part in encouraging them to stretch and push themselves to pursue a higher standard of musicianship.
